Subject: [*] abalone-12.hqx
This file contains version 1.2 Beta 1 of Abalone for the macintosh.
[archivists: this version can safely replace the 1.1 version.]
Changes since version 1.1:
-------------------------
- ADDED NETWORK PLAY OPTION (actually the only 'Beta' part).
- recoded my favourite strategy in assembly.
- nicer graphics for color Mac owners.
- minor bug fixes.
Requirements:
------------
Any Mac running System 7.x (6.x won't do), min. 200k free RAM.
(two of these Macs and some cabling for network play, of course.)
Description:
-----------
Abalone for the Macintosh supports two- and three-player games.
Each of the players can be a human player, the Mac or a net player.
A net player can either be a remote human player or a remote Mac.
You can play abalone almost any way you can think of, for example:
- solitaire against your Mac
- a three-player network game
- in 'demo' mode (Mac vs. Mac [vs. Mac])
- in 'Turing Test' mode: try to guess which of the two net players
is the remote human player, and which the big Quadra.
For those who don't know about Abalone:
--------------------------------------
Abalone is a board game for two or three players.
The original game is played on a nice-looking hexagonal board
with two or three colors of marbles on it.
The object of the game is to push off your opponents marbles, much
like a sumo wrestler tries to push his opponent out of the ring.
You may only push your opponents marbles in a certain direction
if you are 'stronger', that is you have more marbles lined up.
Sounds so simple, doesn't it?

Subject: [*] AppleScripts for THINK six 1.1.sit.hqx
These are three AppleScripts for use in combination with THINK 6.0 or
6.0.1. They require THINK Project Manager 6.0 or 6.0.1 and the Apple
Event Manager to run. To edit them you also need a Script Editor.
"Set THINK Options" is an utility to set the compiler options of
projects dropped on it. This is convenient when you have a
multi-project project (no pun intended) and want to set the 68881,
68020 etcetera options. Unfortunately it only makes it possible to
set or get _all_ the options related to a certain translator. THINK's
interface to get and set the individual switches is rather poor.
"THINK Bring Up to Date" is a droplet which opens and brings up to
date projects dropped on to it.
"THINK Remove Objects" is a droplet which does a "Remove Objects" on
projects dropped on to it.
These scripts may be freely modified and distributed as long as this
accompanying documentation is included and modifications are clearly
indicated. I specifically give permission to distribute them on the
Infomac and Arizona Macintosh User group CD's.

It needs System 7.0 to run.
People can play Chinese Chess over an appletalk network using the program.
They can also chat while they are playing.
The program strength is pretty good when playing in a fast CPU.

Subject: [*] ChunkJoiner 1.0.4
ChunkJoiner is a small utility that lets you join (concatenate)
any number of files in a single chunk. To use it, simply select
the files you want to join, and drag&drop them onto ChunkJoiner.
You will be asked the "type" and "creator" for the newly
created file. You will be also asked for the name of the
application which can open the resulting file; I have added
this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it
to the user if the application is not present.
ChunkJoiner works on any Macintosh, but it
**requires** System 7 or later.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
New in 1.0.4:
The registration form greedily asked for $10 instead of $5;
various minor fixes.
It seems that the new Sound Manager and/or the Speech Manager
want too much stack space, so that sound playing often failed.
I increased my stack requirements, even if I think this is a bug
in the Apple Managers.
Enjoy yourself and remember the $5 shareware fee!

Subject: [*] Folder Icon Cleaner 1.1
Folder Icon Cleaner is a small utility that lets you get rid
correctly of those space and time wasting custom icons, sticked
right there on your folders.
The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file.
The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not
delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only
delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other
information is kept into these Icon files. Folder Icon Cleaner
correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating
the Use custom icon attribute of the folder). No data is lost,
you only gain a little more free space on your disk.
You can even erase every custom folder icon on your disk.
Folder Icon Cleaner can only be used under System 7 or later;
however, it is rather useless on a System 6-or-older Macintosh.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.
New in 1.1:
Fixed all the problems common with ChunkJoiner.
Redesigned the dialog appearing when you drag&drop a disk.
No more asks for confirmation if the folder you dropped
has no custom icon.

Do you think the Finder is too slow and clumsy when navigating through your
folder structure? Do you perhaps use a hierarchical Apple menu utility but
are tired of zigging and zagging your mouse from submenu to submenu? Or
maybe you just like color icons. If so, then you should try Greg's Browser.
Displaying multiple folders in a single window, Greg's Browser lets you
simultaneously see the contents of a folder, its parent, and a subfolder,
providing a quick and easy way of moving both up and down through your
folder hierarchy.
PLEASE READ THE DOCUMENTATION FILE! Odds are that you will discover a
few "new" features that have been included since version 1.0...
Changes since version 1.1
------------------------
o The Browser has a sleek new 3d grayscale interface ala System 7 Pro.
o You can now resize the Browser window to show four file list panes.
o You can now drag and drop the large file icon onto application bookmarks.
o The file list title pop-ups and bookmarks now behave more intuitively.
o The Browser will now do a "Get Info..." or "Reveal" if you select files
while holding down the <option> or <control> keys respectively.
o The scrolling keys on the extended keyboard now work correctly, and if
you don't have the extended keyboard, you can use the numeric keypad.
o Lots of minor changes, bug fixes, and improvements.
Greg's Browser requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw.

Subject: [*] Greg's Buttons 3.1.3
Greg's Buttons v3.1.3 (20 November 1993) (c)1991-93 Gregory D. Landweber
REGISTRATION FEE: US $15 or UK L10 Internet: gdl@maths.ox.ac.uk
Greg's Buttons is a control panel that lets you customize the user interface
of a Macintosh running System 7. Greg's Buttons requires that your Mac
support color, so it won't work on the Plus, SE, Classic, or PowerBook 100.
It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will
still work on a black and white screen, the effect will not be as impressive.
Changes since v3.1.2
-------------------
Fixed two minor conflicts with the system font substitution feature:
o It now works with FrameMaker 4 (just ignore FrameMaker's font warnings).
o It no longer messes with Geneva 12 (which it should never have done).
Changes since v3.1
-----------------
o Fixed the conflict with the Now Menus application substitution feature.
o Added Palatino 14 to the list of substitute system fonts.
o You can now register online using CompuServe (but CompuServe gets 15%).
o Please note that I fixed the conflict with Now Compress in version 3.1.
List of Features
---------------
o Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes,
and radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones. These buttons are
designed to complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7
interface, and in particular they use the color tints that you can
select in the "Color" control panel. You can choose from two styles
of push buttons and three styles of radio buttons and check boxes.
o Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both the
text and background colors), and Finder windows.
o Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen two versions each of Palatino
and Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font.
o Colorizes the mini icons (the smallest size that you can select in the
"Views" control panel) in Finder list views (View by Name, etc.).
o Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons.
"They don't look like buttons unless they're Greg's Buttons."

Subject: [*] GV Variables CCLs
Global Village Teleport Vary and GV PP/G&S Vary
These two CCL scripts are used with AppleTalk Remote Access and the Global
Village Teleport Gold and PowerPort Gold and Silver modems respectively. They
allow the user to choose the maximum speed that they wish to communication
at.
I wrote this because some of the phone lines I dial in from a pretty bad and
although the modems may eventually connect at 14.4 they soon lose they carrier
etc. and crash. It is much easier in this situation to simply try and connect
at a lower speed. Previously, I had hacked some CCL's and each one would
connect at a certain speed. However, this is tedious as it the appropriate
script has to be selected each time from the Remote Access Setup Control
Panel.
Using this CCL I just choose the speed I want and that's it.
Note: The PowerPort and Teleport modems have a very different command set and
functions. When using either 12000 baud or 7200 baud with the Teleport that is
the only speed at which you can communicate. ie If you try to connect to a
modem that does not support these rates then the connection will fail.
However,
with the PowerPort series communication can take place at a lower rate if
12000
or 7200 is not supported.
How It Works:
The ARA CCL language supports a command 'ASK'. This allows the user to type in
a text string. This string can then be printed, either to the screen or to the
modem. (As far as I know I can't do any string comparisons with it, or access
it in any other way!! If any one knows any different please let me know.) This
string is then sent out to the modem which has had 'echo' enabled. The string
is then read back in from the modem and is then compared with 300,1200,.... to
select the appropriate speed via either modem 'AT' or ARA 'serrest' commands.
Please note that these scripts have no yet been approved by Global Village and
are supplied as is with no warrenty etc. However, they work for me and that's
all I was ever bothered about anyway.
Have fun , and let me know if there are problems,
Pete Thornewell (thornewell@lanl.gov)

List Files is a very straightforward utility that creates

on older systems (the minimum version required is 4.2). Just use

Subject: [*] Quit It
Here is yet another Control Panel that competely violates all style guide
rules.
A Macintosh is very easy to use, but neverteless there are naive users
(like my dear Rianne) who don't understand anything about processes etc.
All they see is windows on the screen, and to stop working they just close
the window using the close box. But this leaves the application open, which
can lead to confusion on one side, and on a shortage of memory on the other
side. Quit It can take away this problem: whenever the last window of an
application is closed using the close box, it will quit the application.
That's all there is to it.

SetupPartitions is a neat utility that lets you create more
than one Macintosh partition on a hard disk formatted with
Apple HD SC Setup.
It _requires_ at least System 6.0.4 to run.
Quadra AV users will particularly appreciate SetupPartitions:
in fact, it seems that the only driver exploiting the new
awesome hardware capabilities of the AVs is the Apple one.
So you want to format with Apple HD SC Setup.
Since these days hard disks are pretty huge, you also want
to partition. So you want SetupPartitions.

Subject: [*] Sokoban 1.1.1 (a game)
Sokoban 1.1.1 is an update to Sokoban 1.1. (Not to be confused with
MacSokoban, another implementation of the same game).
Version 1.1.1 fixes a bug that caused graphics to be all black on some
machines with monochrome monitors. If you don't have this problem,
then there's no need to download this update.
Sokoban is a game, or maybe a puzzle. You push treasures around a maze.
Sounds simple, right? Wrong! There's not much room to turn around,
and you have to be careful not to get a treasure stuck in a corner
(you can't pull, just push). And the treasures are too heavy to push
two at once, so don't get one stuck against another. Fortunately you
can undo the last 500 moves and save your position.
The game is easy to play, but hard to solve. But all 85 levels are
solvable, and once you solve them all, you can always make up your own.
Sokoban has been available on Unix machines for a long time; this
is a rewrite for Macintosh. It's FreeWare and works under any
system from 4.1 up (including system 7) on the Mac Plus and newer (and
probably even the 512Ke, but I don't know anyone who has one).

Among the other truly stupid things I've done lately is invite folk who
want the 1984 commercial to send me their favorite backup program if I
don't have it, so I can copy the 13+ megabyte file to floppy for them.
This evening I realized that I never should have offered a blanket
invite. One of our net colleagues sent me Fastback 3.0 and the right
number of HD floppies. I was never a fan of the Intel-Inside version of
Fastback. One of our DOS Pukes (no offense) ordered the program a while
back, and it was nothing but trouble. No one would figure the naughty-
wording thing out.
Fifthgen is consistent. I couldn't figure out Fastback's Mac incarnation.
I spent a good four hours diddling with that sucker today. After an hour
I thought I had a good backup. A bit much, but I was in "learner" mode.
Not feeling real comfy with the program, I figured I had best see if I
could re-create the file from floppy. The first attempt yielded (1) a
request for Disk 1 and (2) a request for Disk 10 and (3) an alert that
Disk 10 did not logically follow Disk 1. Oh boy. I'm in trouble.
Three hours and a lot of Tums after that, I got something onto floppy
that I could re-create. No, I'm not quite sure how. There were a few
double Scotches among those Tums. Even with those ameliorating factors,
neither wife nor dog will speak to me. It seems I got mean.
The upshot? First off I don't recommend Fastback to anyone with a wife
or dog. Or to anyone without a lot of Tums and Scotch. Second off, if you
want a copy of 1984 from me, prettyplease don't ask for it as a Fastback
archive. At best I'll ignore your request.

Unless something has changed recently, this does not work when sending

PPP & SLIP permit TCP/IP to be transmitted over dial-up modem serial lines.

As for problems w/games, Ive had the same problem on the Quadra 840AV.
It generally not a problem w/the hardware but more the programs that cut
corners and write directly to the sound chip rather than use the Sound
Manager (Brodie: I hope you get a fix for Shanghai before XMas, my wife is
nagging me every day about it...:^) ). In any case, not much Apple can do
for those who dont obey the rules (at least the ones at the time they
release the program)... Call the game maker and ask for a fix or scream

Now-Up-To-Date would probably meet this need very nicely. It has the
ability to remind the user for both events and to-dos. It can also
carry over the reminder if the user doesn't acknowledge it. (Sometimes
I think it does to good of a job--it can be very persistant, and

The current version of NUD (version 2.1) couples with Now's new

Well, you could call your local telephone company and ask for an
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line. Various companies
sell ISDN Ethernet bridges at reasonable prices (Combinet, Digiboard,
Network Express, etc.). You can then plug your Centris into the
bridges and have 128,000 to 200,000 bits per second connectivity

This is not as far out as it may seem.

work from the startup harddrive to optimize the startup harddrive, and being
able to be scheduled all make DiskExpress II a more liked product. BTW on
page 181 of the December MacUser for MacUser subscribers is an advertivement
for DiskExpress II for $7.95 at 1-800-378-0431 dept 1. I haven't yet checked
the MacWorld equivalent advertisement, though the people at Alsoft and some of
those who responded to me via e-mail did mention MacWorld subscribers also get
this discount.
Disclaimer: MacWorld and MacUser both should be underlined, as they are
general publications available at the newsstand or by subscription. IMHO they
are both equally as good, though MacUser is less expensive. If MacWorld was
as inexpensive I'd get it too.
I am an enduser of these products.

Subject: Duo Disaster--Modem and Memory Conflict!
Greetings. I was hoping that a net guru could help me solve this one:
I picked my Duo 210 up from my campus Mac dealer today, after getting a 4mb
simm installed in it. The tech pointed out that the Express modem extension
was causing it to bomb on startup. Sure enough, it does. On startup, the
bomb comes up, with the message "Express Modem--inimplemented trap" and a
suggestion to start up with extensions disabled. With extensions disabled,
it works, but suffers from significantly impaired functionality.
Any suggestions? I hauled all the modem and fax related extensions from the
system folder, but it doesn't seem to help. I even checked to make sure
that the tech didn't screw up the installation...everything hardware wise
is fine. (At least, all the pins are in the right places...)

David Anderson indicated that all you had to do was "attach" files from
within the AOL software to an Internet account.... that will not work!
If an AOL user wants to e-mail something to an Internet user... he/she
must open the document (if text) from the AOL software and then use the
"Address Memo" selection. If you get an warning that the file is too
large to open, then only that portion which is viewable will be sent in
that single mailing. AOL's software (at least Mac 2.01) currently will
not "split" an outgoing message. This is unlike AOL's incoming mailer
WILL split the large files coming in from the Internet.
Different platforms using the various versions of AOL software having
different incoming file sizes... the Mac has a 28K incoming limt. But
as noted in previous messages... BinHex'd files incoming need to be
re-assembled and then decoded.
I have not tried to "attach" a file from the MS Windows version of AOL
software... but doubt that it will work either. The error message from
AOL's interface says it is not possible to attach files to Internet or
Fax mailings.
The original poster indicated his brother would like to be able to send

David,
We're running MS Mail 3.1a and are using StarNine's Mail*Link Remote for
a UUCP (dial-up) connection to the Internet. Basically, we're limited to
just mail.
Mail*Link Remote works really well, though I'm not real keen on their
pricing structure. They have 10-, 20-, and more user licenses that they'll
sell you. Some of the other gateways - for other e-mail packages - allow
unlimited users.
StarNine can be reached at <info@starnine.com>. Be sure to mention that
you're using MS Mail, as they have a similar product for QuickMail.
Take care.

Came stifling through the trigger wood,
And troubled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and though,
The Verbal blade went thicker shade.
He left it dead, and with its head,

msullivan writes that he is getting a "Postscript error - offending
command 'imagemask'" on some prints to some printers. I've experienced
the same thing printing FaxSTF faxen since switching to LW8.0. LW8.1.1
seems to have improved things somewhat, but not completely. I'm
printing on a IINT.
My best guess is that the problem relates to sending bitmap data outside
the printable page area. Turning off smoothing can help (don't know why,
though it speeds things up as well). Turning on larger print area can help,
and contributes to my hypothesis about the problem.
The only real solution I've found that always works is to keep a copy of
LW7.2 around. I use QuickKeys as a shortcut in selecting LW7, LW8 and
fax printing.
Michael's experience that the problem was related to resizing the image might
tend to confirm the theory if making the image larger caused the error. In
any event, it's clear that we need LW8.1.2!

I've seen that happen. It is due to the corruption of the Laser Preferences

40 K Bytes/min for plain text files might be way too slow for a v.32,
V.42bis connection. Modern Kermit could run as fast as ZMODEM. I can get
2700 cps for text files through a V.32bis, V.42bis connection. That is
about 160 K Bytes/min. Check your Kermit options for send/receive

I do not know whether this has been dealt with, but I am trying
to run Pascal on a Mac Color Classic (System 7.1) but without success.
I have tried both Turbo Pascal and Think Pascal and both crashed
when I attempted to compile any of their demos. SO, is this a Sys 7.1
problem or something else ?
Thanking you in advance

Subject: Plus, Word 4.00 & StyleWriter II problem.
Dear Info-Mac friends:
A friend of mine have a Macintosh Plus running System 6.0.7. The software
that she use is Microsoft Word 4.00 and Aldus PageMaker 4.00. She also have
ATM and Adobe Type Reunion installed. Recently she bought a StyleWriter II.
She runs the StyleWriter II instalation program expecific for System 6.0.7,
installing also the true type fonts.
In PageMaker 4.00 all fonts in any format works fine. But when she try to use
Microsoft Word 4.00 with true type fonts and "left align" text, the printer
output is a mess. In the screen looks fine. If she use a non true type font
and "left align" text, the printer output is the same as in the screen. The
problem is expecific for Microsoft Word 4.00, true type fonts and "left align"
text.
Is Microsoft Word 4.0 fully compatible with true type fonts? I appriciate any
help. Thanks in advance...

I think I explain all of them at a basic user level in my book, Internet

one of O'Reilly's books on Unix or networking should provide all the
details you could want.

Think about where MacDonalds hamburgers would be if they would have gone for
"moderation". The only business that proceeds with moderation is the phone
compannies - only because they're regulated.

Subject: SAM: still acting up
SAM has been loading up without problem since I changed its type to 'scri' to
resolve conflict with Symbionts (see IM 224). However, now every time I shut
down I get an alert saying that the settings have been modified and SAM would
not work next time I started up. The only change I made since the type-change
is replacing the Virus Defs file with the latest version. Despite the
message,
SAM loads up and is active at the next startup.
Does anyone out there know what is causing this alert?

Subject: SCSI - 80x86 and Mac together???
I have a single Apple 300 CD. I have a 80x86 machine with the Adaptec
1540B SCSI card which is hooked up to 2 SCSI hard drives (no MFM drives
at all)... and of course the Mac, which is a Centris 650. What I would
like to do is to be able to access the CD-ROM from either machine.
Has anyone ever attempted this? The Adaptec has jumper configurations
(defaulted to ID 7) which I could change to ID 6 (currently vacant).
That means the PC could be on 6, the Mac on 7, the drives configured so
that none conflict... although the PC must have it's bootup drive at ID
0! I don't thnk that is a problem with the Mac.
Am I off my rocker... or could this work. I guess that would even give
either machine access to the other's drives. That is another issue...
my primary goal is to connect the single CD-ROM to both machines.

I have: Re-installed the system (7.1)
Zapped the P-RAM
Rebuilt the desktop
Booted without the INITs
Booted from a floppy
Swapped the floppy drive for a new one
Swapped the floppy drive cable for a new one
None of which solved the problem.
I think it must be the SWIM chip - anyone confirm this?

Subject: Summary :eXodus versus MacX
Hi,
A few Infomacs ago, I asked some info about X-emulation on Mac (MacX, eXodus)
It seemed to me that there are more MacX users as eXodus.
The reason is that apple was promoting the product for a long time and was
almost giving it away to gain market.
I also contacted eXodus (White Pine Software) by E-mail. They faxed me a
comparison sheet : 'eXodus 5.0 Beats MacX 1.2 Hands Down!'.
Thanks for the reactions. We're planning to evaluate eXodus for two main
reasons MacX is an X11R4 server (we need an R5) and a rumor (it is believed
that Apple wants to sell off MacX and doesn't want to spend any resources
on it.)
There were a few reactions telling me that eXodus a while ago uses MUCH
memory. That's changed : Exodus requires now 4MB system memory, 2M
application.
Another important change : they no longer have only the ability of
displaying X windows within a "root" window. Now they have Local 'Rootless'
Window Management (Mac & Motif-style) and Remote 'Rooted' Window Management
supporting (mwm, olwm, dxwm, ...)
If anyone wants to have more info, feel free to contact me !

What is the biggest PICT-file TeachText can open with it's default
memory?
I just tried to open "MacHistory 11/93" and two of it's biggest files
(ColorHistory1 and LaserHistory1; 96K and 97K on my HD) refused to
open properly. TeachText only opened them once ~immediately after~
~it's launch~, thereafter I just got an empty document. This happened
with Shift-boot also (PB100, 7.0.1*).
When I raised TeachText's application memory size from the default
192K to 200K the problem disappeared.

Subject: TurboCAD
A *Private* offer, expiring on the 31st of December, for an item called
TurboCAD for the Macintosh by IMSI has just arrived at my desk. The offer
comes from the President, a Mr. Martin Sacks, who tells me that TurboCAD
regularly retails at $195 but is being specially offered for a mere Can$63.40
($49.95 [item price] + $3.50 [tax] + $9.95 [shipping]), is a direct but more
evolved descendent of an item called PEGASYS which retailed for a mere $2245
just last year, and is accompanied by a free copy of DiskExpress II.
Furthermore, I will have 60 days to evaluate it and if not satisfied I can
return it for a refund of everything but the shipping charge.
It seems to require additional symbol libraries, of which there are 19 in all,
available at additional and presumably varying costs. The Landscape one sounds
quite elaborate, in going beyond plant templates. It seems to have some
interesting features that may take it beyond the *usual* drawing package, but
seems to lack certain automated features, like section and elevation
creation.
Also it seems to be a 2D package. The advertised retail price just makes me
wonder whether it is merely another IntelliDraw, albeit with a slightly
different perspective (or even less!), and whether it has some genuine CAD
functions (is there a standard of functionality that distinguishes a genuine
CAD package from a mere Drawing package?). But on the other hand Christmas is
nigh . . . . .
Has anyone had any experience with or even heard of either TurboCAD or
PEGASYS? Any information will be gratefully received.
TIA and Cheers.

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who uses ZTerm regularly to
connect to a Unix box. He'd like to be able to use Monaco at 18pt as
his preferred font, but is cureently stuck with using it at 12pt.
The reason is that although the font displays OK, pressing backspace
does -not- delete the character on-screen. Unix knows it's been
deleted, but ZTerm's display doesn't seem to want to know.
Has anyone encountered this problem before? I'm not a user of ZTerm
myself, but I'd be interested in any replies so that I can pass the
information along to the the guy in question.
Thanks in advance for any information.
